Connecting Through Art: A Tour of Kusama Yayoi’s Exhibition

アートの視点でつながる:草間彌生美術館を巡るツアー

At U Share, we continuously seek opportunities to foster cultural exchange and deeper connections among residents. On March 2, we hosted a special tour to the Kusama Yayoi Museum, offering participants the chance to experience the works of one of Japan’s most renowned contemporary artists while engaging in meaningful discussions with fellow residents.

Why Kusama Yayoi Museum?

We chose the Yayoi Kusama Museum as our field trip destination because her art is not only visually captivating but also deeply philosophical, touching on themes of life, death, and self-obliteration. Kusama’s artistic journey is intertwined with her personal struggles, making her work a compelling exploration of resilience and creative expression. This particular exhibition, “I WOULD OVERCOME DEATH AND GO ON LIVING,” highlights how Kusama has grappled with mortality through her art, making it a fitting experience for residents interested in art that tells a powerful story.

Immersing in Kusama’s Art

After gathering at U Share, we visited the museum and spent about an hour exploring Kusama’s evolving perspectives on life and death through her paintings, sculptures, and installations. Her distinctive artistic style—characterized by polka dots, infinity motifs, and bold colors—fascinated participants. Through the exhibition, we witnessed how her artistic approach transitioned from dark and introspective pieces in the 1970s and 80s to vibrant, life-affirming works in recent years. The Japanese and English descriptions provided deeper insight into her themes, allowing international residents to fully grasp the meaning behind the art.

One of the highlights of the visit was the rooftop installation, where Kusama’s iconic “Pumpkin” sculpture stands. Here, we took a group photo, commemorating our shared experience. The artwork’s bold colors and intricate design sparked lively discussions, demonstrating the power of art to connect people across cultures and perspectives.

Reflecting on Art and Self-Expression

Beyond the visual spectacle, the museum’s tranquil environment encouraged moments of personal reflection. Engaging with Kusama’s works prompted introspective conversations about themes of creativity, mental health, and the concept of infinity. We discussed how Kusama’s repeated motifs and immersive installations reflect her desire to transcend personal struggles and connect with something greater than oneself.

This visit was not just about seeing art—it was about experiencing its emotional and philosophical depth. By the end of the tour, residents left with a newfound appreciation for Kusama’s artistic vision and a better understanding of how art can be a powerful medium for self-expression and healing.

Looking Ahead

This field trip was a meaningful opportunity for residents to bond through shared experiences and deepen their appreciation for contemporary art. Even those who were meeting for the first time found it easy to engage in discussions and build connections. Inspired by the success of this tour, we plan to continue organizing cultural events that allow residents to explore art, philosophy, and self-expression together.

For those who were inspired by Kusama’s unique artistic vision, the next exhibition at the Yayoi Kusama Museum, “Reverberation from the Universe,” will run from April 24 to August 31, 2025. This upcoming exhibition will focus on the theme of illness as the driving force behind Kusama’s art, showcasing her lifelong struggle with mental health and how it shaped her creative journey. If you missed this tour, be sure to visit the museum for its next captivating display!
