At U Share, residents are always discovering new ways to immerse themselves in meaningful cultural experiences. On December 13, we hosted a Sushi Making Workshop, a special collaboration between U Share Nishi Waseda and U Share Minami Aoyama, as part of our effort to foster connections across our two communities. This marked the first-ever joint event between the two locations, and it successfully brought together students from Nishi Waseda and working professionals from Minami Aoyama to celebrate one of Japan’s most cherished traditions.
The evening began with self-introductions, setting a friendly and inclusive tone. Participants represented a diverse range of nationalities, including residents from New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Denmark, France, Germany, and the United States, making this event a true global exchange. Masa, the CEO of U Share, then took the lead with an engaging sushi-making demonstration. He emphasized the importance of the perfectly prepared sushi rice (shari) and shared tips on how to shape sushi with just the right balance and technique. His guidance captivated the audience, inspiring confidence even in those who had never tried making sushi before.
After the demonstration, it was time for residents to put their new skills to the test. The room buzzed with energy as participants rolled up their sleeves and crafted their own sushi creations. The lively atmosphere broke down barriers, encouraging conversations and fostering genuine connections across different ages, nationalities, and professions. U Share Minami Aoyama residents also brought an impressive selection of premium Japanese sake from regions across Japan, which paired perfectly with the sushi and elevated the dining experience.
This workshop exemplified U Share’s mission: creating a community that thrives on diversity, shared learning, and mutual growth. By connecting residents from different walks of life, it demonstrated the power of cultural exchange to deepen understanding and build lasting friendships. Whether it was the laughter shared over imperfect sushi rolls or the excitement of trying new flavors, every moment of the event contributed to a sense of unity and belonging.
By the end of the night, the sushi wasn’t just a delicious meal—it became a symbol of connection, discovery, and shared experiences. This event reminds us that food is more than nourishment; it’s a universal language that brings people together. We look forward to seeing you at the next cultural event at U Share!
